Juicy strawberries and sweet apples are nestled beneath the golden streusel-like crumb topping of this Easy Strawberry and Apple Crumble.
Although a dessert like Strawberry and Apple Crumble is sweet and delicious, I somehow feel better about eating this kind of sweet treat. I mean, fruit is supposed to be healthy, right?
This dessert satisfies a sweet tooth and also offers a few bonus points because it's made with fruit and oats—a win-win!

Ingredients
Here is a summary of the ingredients you'll need to make this Easy Strawberry and Apple Crumble:
Ingredient Notes
- Apples: The apples I like the best for this Strawberry and Apple Crumble are Golden Delicious because they are sweet and retain their shape when baked.
- Brown sugar: Brown sugar is used in the fruit filling, and in the crumble topping.
See the recipe card below for all the ingredients and measurements.
Substitutions & Variations
- Apples: If you can't find Golden Delicious, substitute Braeburn or Jonagold apples. For a more tart Strawberry and Apple Crumble, opt for Granny Smith, Empire, or Cortland, as these are among the best apples for baking and in pies.
- Don't use McIntosh apples because they break down when you cook them (best for apple sauce).
- Oats: Substitute Quick Oats for Old-Fashioned Oats.
How to Make Strawberry Apple Crumble
I love the ease of this recipe. It is quick to make and uses seasonal produce like strawberries and apples.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Heat the oven and prep the apples. Heat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Meanwhile, cut up the apples and set them aside in a 12-inch deep dish ceramic or glass pie plate.
Prep the strawberries. Cut the strawberries and set aside in a small bowl.
Add cornstarch and part of the brown sugar. To the bowl of strawberries, add the cornstarch and 2 tablespoons brown sugar. Stir to combine, and let rest for 5 minutes while you prepare the crumble.
Make the crumble. Add the flour, oats, remaining brown sugar, melted butter, cinnamon and salt to a small bowl. Stir well to combine.
Assemble. To the 12-inch pie plate, add the strawberries over the apples.
Top with crumble and bake. Pour the crumble mixture over the strawberries and apples, distributing evenly, and bake uncovered on the bottom rack of the oven for 45 minutes to 1 hour.
The strawberry apple crumble is ready when the crumble is golden, the edges are bubbling, and when you insert a paring knife into the center of the crumble and there is no resistance.
Secrets for Success
- Use a suitable variety of apples: Golden Delicious, Braeburn, or Jonagold are my top picks for this recipe because they retain their shape, are sweet and don't expel too much liquid after they've baked.
Storage, Reheating & Make Ahead
- Storage: Once the crumble has cooled, cover and refrigerate. It is best eaten within 3 days.
- Reheating: Apple and Strawberry Crumble is best eaten warm, so I recommend you warm any leftovers in the microwave for 30-45 seconds.
- Make ahead: You can make this dessert ahead of time and warm up at a later point in the oven at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 20 minutes.
Recipe FAQs
I have yet to try making this recipe with frozen strawberries. But if I did, I would thaw the berries first and drain away any accumulated liquid before incorporating them into the recipe.
Crumbles and crisps are very similar, although a crisp usually differentiates itself from a crumble because it contains oats.
Over time, these two terms have become interchangeable (hence why this recipe is called a crumble).
This dessert is most often called a crumble in Canada and the United Kingdom, and a crisp in the United States.
To keep the crumble crunchy, you must use the right proportion of butter, which is the binding agent to the dry ingredients in this recipe.
It helps to use suitable apples (as mentioned above). Golden Delicious apples are great in this recipe because they don't expel too much liquid as they cook.
Cooking the Strawberry and Apple Crumble uncovered will make the crumble topping crunchy and golden.
